The P&F Back to School Bash family event was a great success. Families enjoyed themselves and students had fun getting their faces painted, bouncing on the castle and tackling the inflatable course. The silent disco was a big hit with students on the dance floor all night. The sausage sizzle and pork rolls were enjoyed by all, but the hot chips were the star of the night. A big thank you to all P&F members, volunteers and the ADHOC Fathering group who assisted with the preparations and running of the night.
Last Friday staff engaged in a First Aid course run by St John Ambulance WA. The day included hands-on training that required staff to learn how to properly assess an emergency situation, CPR techniques on adults and infants, using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), first aid procedures for bleeding, burns and fractures, managing medical conditions such as anaphylaxis, asthma and seizures and managing medical emergencies such as snake/spider bites, poisons and choking.
My personal Principal Performance Review will be conducted during Term 2 and will involve input from staff, parents and students. This Review takes place three years after an appointment followed by another in the eighth year of a Principal’s tenure.
For the safety of all could parents and students please use the walkway at the front of the school rather than walking through the carpark. Walking through the middle of the staff carpark is dangerous as cars come and go throughout the day.

As the swimming carnival is on Tuesday 13th March, and many children will be very tired, our choir rehearsal will change, just for the week, to Monday 12th March at 3.00pm in the church. This will be an exciting rehearsal as it will be the first time the new songs for this year's One Big Voice will be heard. I will be attending the first of three PD sessions on Saturday 10th March to receive all the songs, CDs and music. Please be there to hear all the fantastic new repertoire for OBV 2018.

OLGC has been involved in One Big Voice for three years and we are looking forward to a fourth. There is a proposal that there may be a matinee performance in addition to the evening performance. We have applied to participate in the matinee performance only due to students in Years One and Two being in the choir.

For those who don't know about One Big Voice, please read on:
The first performance involved six local schools (Currambine, Kinross, Mindarie, Quinns Rocks, Joondalup, and Merriwa) and 450 students.
In 2001 the first committee was formed with Judy Vorster, Donna Marwick O’Brien, Helen Fabri, Paul Storey and Berne Rogers. This committee continued to work together until 2006 when Judy relocated to Queensland, leaving the festival (now known as Westcoast Songfest) in the capable hands of Donna Marwick-O’Brien, Helen Fabri and Paul Storey who continued to develop it.
Sadly, Paul Storey resigned due to ill health and in 2015, passed away. His contribution to music, children and the festival is greatly missed.
By 2015 three festivals at Joondalup Arena and one south of the river at the Rockingham Mike Barnett, Sports Complex were held with approximately 4600 students participating in total.
New and wonderful committee members joined Donna Marwick-O’Brien and Helen Fabri, and 2016 marked our 17th anniversary with 4000 students from 74 schools performing at the Perth Arena, and the realisation of our dream of performing as One Big Voice. Helen Fabri resigned at the end of 2016, after sixteen years with the festival. Her role in the development of this festival has made a significant contribution to music education in Western Australia and the wider community.
Again in 2017 schools came together at the world-class venue, Perth Arena, to perform for one evening performance as One Big Voice. Lux Events worked alongside us, providing an amazing 40 metre curved LED screen (the only one in Australia), and effect lighting added some extra magic to the performance. Our popular Young Talent section was introduced in 2013 and provides an opportunity to showcase the talents of our older students who are no longer in primary school. Outstanding young performers are invited to entertain the audience for 30 minutes before the concert begins.
One Big Voice continues to evolve each year, and 2018 will see the inclusion of the OBV choir. This choir is for students from years 5-8 who wish to continue participating in One Big Voice but are no longer able to do so as they have moved on to high school or a school that does not participate. From the OBV choir, a performance choir will be selected to represent One Big Voice at various events throughout the year.
One Big Voice has become an important part of the school year and is a highlight for students and teachers. Donna Marwick-O’Brien continues to write, arrange and develop the musical programme and provide opportunities for as many students as possible in the roles of soloists, vocal groups, comperes, dancers and in 2018 instrumentalists will also be highlighted. In 2017, more than 130 students participated in these roles. The repertoire and professional development provided annually assist music and classroom teachers in their school environment.
The teachers involved in One Big Voice work as a team. They are talented, hardworking and enthusiastic, preparing their students for this special experience.
As Plato said, “music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”

Regular Savers Contribution
A Regular Savers Contribution of $5 is paid to the school for every 10 School Banking deposits processed per student, in line with the existing School Banking Rewards Program for students. Payment will occur on a quarterly basis in January, April, July and October.
Annual Contribution (existing schools)
An Annual Contribution is paid to the school each calendar year when their first School Banking deposit is processed. The amount paid is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

This is based on how many students we have banking at the school (2018 – 75 students)
Payment will occur within two business days of deposit*.
To participate in school banking your child needs a a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. If they do not already have one they can be opened in branch or online.
In branch - Visit any Commonwealth Bank branch - Parents will need to bring along identification for themselves and their child (eg their Driver licence and their child’s birth certificate).
Online - Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account. When you have selected to participate in School Banking, a School Banking welcome pack will be mailed to your home address, including a Dollarmite deposit wallet and book. When the books arrive (6-10 working days), please write the account details onto the deposit book. Then bring that deposit book along to school banking on a Wednesday.

BACK TO SCHOOL BASH
Thanks to everyone that came along to the first function of the school year. It was great to see so many families enjoying the event and the entertainment that was on offer. Thank you also to all the volunteers that helped with set up, pack down and serving food on the night – these events can’t run without the help from the school community.
It's back!!! Due to its popularity the pasta drive is back this year so please place your orders between 7th-22nd March. OLGC and Golden Ravioli have teamed up to deliver delicious home cooked meals ready for you to take home. Delivery will be to the school canteen on Tuesday 10th April. Meals by Mums is an opportunity to volunteer and make meals for those less fortunate; preparing ‘home cooked’, individual meals for use by Shopfront WA. If you would like to assist with the preparation of meals the next morning is THURSDAY 22ND MARCH in the canteen. No cooking skills required! AFL Footy Tipping at OLGC is back for 2018, please look out for details circulating soon. It is very important that payment is made by everyone who joins this competition.
The 2018 Toyota AFL Premiership season kicks off on Thursday 22 March with last year’s Premiers Richmond taking on Carlton at the MCG. To get into the spirit of friendly competition and banter, we will be running an OLGC / ADHOC tipping competition open to Dad, Mum’s, Kids, Teachers and Friends of OLGC school.

To be eligible to play, a $20 entry fee is required. Half the money will go towards tipping prizemoney and the other half towards OLGC ADHOC and P & F events throughout the year.

Parents are also able to pay in the School office using the EFTPOS machine or exact cash amount.
Please ensure payment is made prior to the start of Round 3. No pay, no play and you will be removed from the tipping competition as we unfortunately had a number of people not pay up last year. Once final payments have been made prizemoney will be determined and details shared.
The season will have 23 rounds, with each team playing 22 games during the season and receiving one bye. We will only be tipping to the last round of the regular season which finishes the weekend commencing Friday 24th August, and the Grand Final will be played on Saturday 29th September. Further rules and conditions are contained on the Footy tips website once you register - please have a read through.
Parents please note: If your kids are entering the tipping comp, we strongly recommend that you update the settings in their profile to record their birthdate to ensure that they don’t receive Betting Company advertisements.

For the last 9 years a programme has been in place offering the opportunity to young French students aged 14-17 years to discover Australia and its education system.
We are looking for families willing to host students for the four weeks of their visit. They will travel to and from school with your children.
The purpose of the programme is for these French students to experience living with an Australian family, to see how an Australian school operates, to improve their English language skills through this full immersion and to create a strong friendship with their Anglophone peers. The programme is highly successful and both Australians and French students greatly enjoy the exchange. Many families still keep in touch with each other.
The students are fully briefed about the school rules, are not to leave the school premises and will attend classes daily. They will be fully covered by appropriate insurance.
Host families will be visited prior to the arrival by the organiser to explain the programme.
We believe such an exchange is also highly beneficial for our Modern Languages students, opening their eyes (and ears!) to similarly minded students for an extended period.
