Students in Year 3 and Year 5 take part in The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment (BRLA) over the next two weeks. The assessment will be accessible to students online with Year 5 compleing the assessment on Monday 7th August and Year 3 on Monday 14th August. The purpose of the BRLA is to measure student learning of the content in the RE curriculum. The BRLA provides a ‘point in time’ snapshot of student performance in RE. Students’ knowledge and understanding of the content of the RE curriculum is assessed using a combination of multiple choice, short and extended response items. The use of the BRLA complements the school based assessment programs in Religious Education.
I was fortunate to attend the Liturgical Choir performance as part of the Catholic Education Performing Arts Festival. Our school choir did an exceptional job receiving some outstanding feedback from the adjudicator. I believe that they were the best choir there giving an amazing performance. a big thank you to Mrs Bennett for all her hard work and effort in preparing the students. thank you as well to parents who have supported the students in so many ways.
Holidays during term time
While families are not encouraged to take time off during school time this is sometimes unavoidable. If your child is going to be absent for any length of time, a written letter or email is required prior to their absence. There are no expectations for teachers to provide a program of work for students while on holiday during term time. Students are encouraged to read daily and keep a diary of their holiday adventures. If using programs such as Matheletics they are able to continue with this work. Learning can occur while away on holidays through the engagement with rich environment and culture which allows students to develop a greater understanding of the world in which they live.
Feast of the Assumption
There will be a school mass on Tuesday 15th August at 9.00am to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. The feast of the Assumption of Mary, the Mother of God, reminds us that Mary, our Mother faced her challenges in life with humility and faith. Her willingness to say ‘yes’ to God is evidence of her enduring faith. Mary is a source of strength, as through her inspiration, we pray for a deeper trust in God’s love.
Parents Quiz Night
The P&F have been very busy preparing for the upcoming Parents Quiz Night which will be held on the evening of Friday the 25th August. The Quiz Night is open to the parents of the OLGC school community. Please support this great community event. More information can be found in the P&F section of this newsletter.
Well done to all students who have represented OLGC with their musical talents throughout the festival. Congratulations to Kesia Connery and Lucy Reeler for their piano performances, to Ruby Tuite for her performance on drum kit and best of luck to Luke Guilfoyle who will be performing on guitar in the next few days.
Thank you to all students who sang beautifully on Tuesday at St Benedict's Church in Applecross. Here are some of the adjudicator's comments: (Shout to the Lord)The girls really captured the mood of the opening of this beautiful song. They sang with a free, open sound with excellent attention to dynamics and interpretation. (For the Beauty of the Earth) Once again the girls sang with a beautiful, round tone, very suitable for this song. Excellent maintenance of the two parts. Congratulations on an excellent performance.
The Year Four class and the Social Ministry are hoping to make a child in Cambodia, Kenya or the Philippines very happy this Christmas… but we need your help!
We would like to participate in
SCHOOL BAGS For JESUS
For those who may be unfamiliar with the project, it involves filling a drawstring bag with new items that will be given to a child living in poverty overseas. We have set a goal of approximately sixty bags.
A note has gone home to each child, detailing what is needed by the charity. If families choose to take part in this initiative, they are only requested to bring in the items that are highlighted on the note. Items can be placed in the boxes that can be found in each classroom by 24th August 2017.
Please note that this is NOT a compulsory activity- your family is invited to participate or not at your own discretion.

This year we will be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Through this program we are able to get new educational resources for our school – and all we need you to do is shop at Woolworths. From now until Tuesday 19th September, we are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers.
You will get one Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Place the sticker onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and when it’s complete, the Sticker Sheet can be dropped into the Collection Box here at the school office or at Woolworths Karrinyup. At the end of the promotion, we’ll be able to get some great new equipment.
MEALS BY MUMS
As we rug up indoors through these winter months, there is more of a need for some less fortunate than us to be able to receive a hot meal. The next Meals by Mums cook up is Wednesday 23rd August; we would love some more volunteers for a few hours of their day (approx. 4 hours) to help cook around 100 meals for Shopfront WA. Please contact Nicola (0403 158 151) if you can help out this term or perhaps for a future date.
