Today children from Year 1 – 6 attended the Ash Wednesday Mass and I distributed the ashes to Kindy and Pre Primary. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten period leading up to Easter. The ashes are made from palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration last year. The ashes are blessed with Holy Water and are scented with incense. The ashes are applied to the forehead in the shape of a cross and reminds us of our call to repent and believe in the Gospel as well as the will for change and the hope of forgiveness.
Our new collaboration with Lawley's Bakery running our canteen has had a very positive response from both parents and students. The variety of choice and quality of the food has exceeded expectations. Through the online canteen system you are able to pre order recess and lunch in advance, please be careful that you are selecting the correct date and not the following week. A reminder that canteen runs on a Wednesday and Friday each week. Orders must be placed by no later than 8am. Please find attached a current menu.
A reminder that this Friday is a Pupil Free Day. Staff will be engaged in learning around the Western Australian Technologies Curriculum. This is a collaborative professional development between OLGC, St John's Primary school and Holy Spirit Primary School. I am sure it will be a day full of creative learning.
On Tuesday each family would have received a copy of this years school fees. Contained within the fee pack was a Fee Payment Form. Each family is asked that this form be filled out and returned to school by no later than the 10th March 2017.
Archbishop Timothy Costelloe attended Royal Commission hearings along with metropolitan Archbishops from other states, and spoke frankly and openly about the Catholic Church’s failings, acknowledging the real hurt and suffering experienced by survivors of abuse, and answering questions about the Archdiocese of Perth’s ongoing work to seek healing and reconciliation.
Now that the final hearing of the Royal Commission has concluded, Archbishop Costelloe has published a pastoral letter, as well as a video conveying the same message, for the Catholic Community of the Archdiocese of Perth, including Catholic schools. Please view the Archbishop’s video here or read the attached letter:
The Environmental Ministry have held their first Paper Making Workshop. As a school, we have already collected a huge amount of paper that is ready to be recycled. It was great to see some of this paper being reused to make something new. Many students from all years helped to tear up the old paper to make pulp. Some of us were then were able to use the pulp to make new paper. All of our paper was green because we had added green card to our pulp. Next week we will experiment with adding natural materials such as petals and leaves to create different designs and effects. We will also try to make some different coloured paper. See you on Thursday at lunchtime in the Kindy classroom!
Please find attached below a notice from the Australian Government Department of Education and Training (the department), to advise you that the department has requested the school provides a statement of addresses, in accordance with section 21 of the Australian Education Regulation 2013 (the Regulation).

MEALS BY MUMS – 2017 Volunteers
The P&F is supporting this initiative that was set up by a group of OLGC parents to support Shopfront WA (http://shopfrontwa.org.au), an agency of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Perth that aims to provide help to those in need. One of the most immediate of these needs is often a hot meal and Meals by Mums was created to prepare 'home cooked' individual meals for use by Shopfront. This is a fantastic cause and as of November 2015, Meals by Mums has provided over 1000 meals to Shopfront.
The group of ladies that run Meals by Mums have since moved on from OLGC but continue to come back several times a year to cook their meals using the school canteen.
They are seeking more volunteers from current OLGC families to help with the preparation of these meals once a term.
The date for this term is THURSDAY 16th MARCH AT 8.30AM-12PM - if you would like to spend the morning helping out, please contact Tracey Woodward - email@example.com

Natalie and Jodie bring new ideas, new product and new happenings through various adult and children’s workshops here in Perth!
In this three hour screen printing and textile colour enriching workshop you will learn how to cut paper stencils, explore and experiment using exposed silk screens printing on various materials. The screen printing means people have the option to take home fabric they have made from scratch and then transform it into something that is truly unique to them. The children's liturgy will be running the 1st Sunday of the month at the OLGC parish 8.00 am mass in school terms . The liturgy will commence on 2nd April . The subsequent dates will be 7th May, 4th June, 6th August, 3rd September, 5th November and 3rd December.
Is there any one who would like to volunteer to help run the liturgies this year. The volunteer would only need to attend the mass and help run the liturgy by assisting with the activities. Parents can even volunteer on the day at mass and I will particularly need help most likely for the April and June liturgies where the liturgy attendance jumps in numbers from about 10 to 30 children!
Also I will be overseas when the August liturgy is running so if any parent/parents would be keen to run this liturgy please contact the school office.
